Our Review of One Share

These are one of our Favorite Gifts and One Share has a wonderful assortment of stocks available. The company has been in business since 1996 since the owner came up with one of those gifts that lasts a lifetime (literally). Since this is real stock, you pay the going stock price and the value may go up or down.

How many times have you said something like "I should own stock in this company" Well, here's your chance. With OneShare, gift givers can buy a stock for $39 plus the cost of a share of the stock. Frames and personalized engravings range from $34-$64, but shoppers can obtain a unique and valuable gift starting at about $40. The new stockholder receives an official, framed certificate for his or her share in the selected company, plus voting privileges, annual reports and any dividends that come with stock ownership. Every gift also includes the OneShare Start-Up Kit, which can be shipped immediately to announce last-minute gifts and contains a Quick Reference Guide, Owner’s Manual and Congratulations Card.

Children can learn about money and investing through OneShare’s “My First Stock” collection that features kid-friendly companies and themed framing options. With a real share of McDonald’s, Mattel or Build-A-Bear, kids experience owning a piece of a company and begin to understand how they can parlay sound investments into savings for their future.

Here's how it works.
You pay the price of the stock plus a $39 transfer fee and a frame charge. Paper frames are available free of charge on stocks that are under $44 trading price.

Then, one share gives you the choice of taking the framed stock or adding in some extra features. You can add in your choice of mattes with sayings like "Certified Shareholder" or "In case of Emergency - Break Glass" . You can also add an engraved plaque with your own message or one they have written. They have some great sayings for each company.

Comparing the Costs
This seemed like such a great idea and a gift, so we had to check out what it would cost to get a share of stock from one of those discount brokers or full service brokers and here is what we learned. Their trading fee is small, but once you get the share in your hands, One Share is a bargain. Discount Brokers Charged from $9 to $11 for the trade, then $20-$25 for the transfer of title fee, then added in a cost of between $35 to $50 to get the paper certificate making the least expensive one we found at $70 instead of the $39 that One Share charges.
